What’s the first thing you do when you start your workday at Expressions?
I always start with a coffee within reach before I fire up my laptop. Checking emails is first on my list, although I am well aware that email can serve as a huge time waster and distraction, so I also have a never-ending To Do list that I try to tick a few lines off each day.
What is one thing that can happen that is sure to bring a smile to your face?
I am especially passionate about fundraising events that bring the community together, it’s so important for the families and kids, so I love that Expressions provides a simple, stress-free solution. Our tea towels are celebratory and inclusive and have a genuine feel good factor. They’ve become a tradition for so many of our clients, the sentimentality of kids being surrounded by their friends and favourite teachers creates a warm and fuzzy for all, it’s like a yearbook on a tea towel.
Over 50% of all volunteers in Australia are women with school aged children, people just like me! Not only have I worked in fundraising for over 20 years, but I have also served on many committees, starting with playgroup, the community kindergarten, volunteered and coached for the soccer club and am still an active member on the school P&C. Because of this, I have a rich understanding of the very important world of community fundraising from both sides of the fence. I understand from first-hand experience how precious all volunteer hours are, so providing everything needed and supporting the volunteers who make an enormous difference to grassroots communities is vital.
If a volunteer were to phone in asking for advice on how to run a fundraiser, what is the number one thing you would tell them?
I’d tell them that we want to make the process as easy as possible for them and everything they need is supplied. Our products are the best sales tool, so display a sample tea towel for everyone to see and touch, this really helps to get everyone enthusiastic about the project.
Half of our annual workload is repeat bookings and hundreds of Coordinators and organisations have worked with us over many years. Our practical products make a lasting memento and the designs encompass a real sense of community, so they sell well.
